「上を向いて歩こう」ウクレレカバー（練習） Ue wo Muite Arukou (Sukiyaki) ukulele cover

Day 45 of #100DaysofUke2020: 上を向いて歩こう“Ue wo Muite Arukou” by Kyu Sakamoto, otherwise known abroad as the Sukiyaki song for no reason other than it was a distinctive Japanese word in the ‘60s.
This year has been hard on everyone for so many reasons. This song is about hanging in there, looking up and walking on even as you cry.
My translation of verses 1 and 2:
“Look up as you walk on/ So the tears don’t overflow/ Remember spring days/ A night all alone.
Look up and walk on/ Count the blurred stars/ Remember summer days/ A night all alone.”
If you listen to the original, the music (starting with a marimba trill and interspersed with whistling) is much more cheerful than the words suggest! I didn’t even realize anything about the words were “sad” at first! It was another one of the first songs I ever learned when I came to Japan, so I’m happy to play it (messily since the chord transitions and particularly the Bm chord are hard for me). Thanks to my bf for whistling again, and for making sure I’m Not all alone.
After posting this in the 100 Days of Ukulele Songs2020 Facebook group, I heard from people all over the world how much they loved this song. It has a really interesting history too, so definitely look it up!
